Napa Angel may be a new name in the Napa Valley but the history behind the winemaking is anything but. The Montes Family, one of Chile's leading wine producers, have dedicated themselves with this new venture to produce wines that express the essence of Napa's best vineyards.
Like all great vineyards, the vineyards of Napa Angel are planted in soils that stress the vines just enough to keep crop loads low. This allows the grape clusters to develop complexity and flavor not possible when vines do not need to struggle. Warm days and cool nights maintain the acidity levels as the grapes ripen providing one of the keys for producing great wine.
We are normally skeptical when a new winery comes on the scene in an established area like the Napa Valley, waiting to taste the wine before passing judgment. What we can say after tasting the wine is that you will not be disappointed.
Both wines released offer the complexity and balance to stand up to the best Napa Valley has to offer. While not inexpensive, the Napa Angel Reserve Cabernet and the Napa Angel Aurelio´s Selection Cabernet are worth the cost. They are actually priced much lower than many comparable wines from the region adding to their value.
Napa Angel 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon:
Well balanced wine offering aromas of red currant, cherry and plum nuanced by cedar and hints of smoky oak. Pleasingly long finish with rich tannins and fruit in the mouth. The wine is ready to drink now but should continue to improve over the next 3-4 years. ($55)
Napa Angel 2006 Aurelio´s Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
The Aurelio's Selection is a big wine loaded with dark fruit notes of blackberry, plum and dark cherry. Firm tannins and a finish that goes on and on. This baby could use to lay down for another 6-10 years to reach its peak yet it is still enjoyable in its youth. ($95)
